Kevyn Aucoin The Sculpting Powder Review

Monday 14 March 2016

My favourite step in my makeup routine is definitely contouring - I absolutely love how I can use creams and powders to carve out my cheekbones and sculpt my face. When it comes to contouring products, every makeup brand known to man have released their own sculpting ranges, but the holy grail of sculpting powders is said to be Kevyn Aucoin's The Sculpting Powder in Medium. At the time of purchasing this, the only shade available was Medium, but the brand has since launched a Light and a Deep shade.
The powder is the perfect cool toned, almost grey contour. I find that a lot of contouring products tend to be too warm to provide the shadow you need to imitate the look of defined cheekbones. Initially when I swatched this, I was worried that the grey would look ridiculous on my relatively pale skin, but it's so soft and buttery that it just blends seamlessly into the skin. It's intensely pigmented - I only barely touch my brush into the product to get enough to contour both sides of my face, so don't be too generous when applying it! To me, that somewhat justifies the hefty price tag of it - I don't ever see myself running out of this product as you need only the slightest amount each time you use it.

For application, I use the Real Techniques Bold Metals 301 Flat Contour Brush (€30). I love its dense head, it really distributes the powder evenly and makes it super easy to blend. Depending on how intense I want my contour, sometimes I just use this to lay down the product, then go back in with a fluffier brush to buff the contour out.

I really don't have anything negative to say about this product - it is by far the best sculpting powder I've ever come across. It's the only true taupe shade that actually mimics provides a shadow to your face without looking muddy or just plain ridiculous. As it's a Kevyn Aucoin product, it's on the pricier side but as I said earlier, a little goes the longest way with this powder, so you definitely get bang for your buck.

The Sculpting Powder is €39.10, and as I said, it's now available in three shades. If you're looking for Kevyn Aucoin stockists, I buy his products from beautybay.com, or alternatively you can get them in Space NK.

Have you ever tried the Sculpting Powder?

  1. Man, I love this sculpting powder, seriously. It really is the best that I've ever used, because the shade just so perfectly mimics the shadows on your face, instead of making you look like you have unblended stripes of bronzer on.
